About Saint-Jacques Church (Église Saint-Jacques)

Saint-Jacques Church is a magnificent 16th-century Renaissance church perched on a hillside overlooking the port and town of Le Tréport. As the last remaining vestige of the medieval Saint-Michel Abbey founded in the 11th century, the church features a distinctive checkerboard facade of dark sandstone and flint typical of Norman architecture. Inside, visitors can admire remarkable hanging keystones, with the largest measuring an impressive 3.80 meters in height, along with a beautiful Renaissance portal decorated with Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage motifs. The church houses exceptional artwork including a sculptural Entombment group, 14 stunning stained glass windows from the 1860s by Parisian Lusson workshops, and a magnificent 17th-century wooden pulpit. Classified as a Historic Monument since 1840, the church offers free admission daily and can be reached by climbing 73 steps from the port area.

Interesting Facts

The original church on this site was destabilized in the 11th century when the Count of Eu diverted the Bresle River to extend the port, causing the structure to collapse in 1360. The current church was rebuilt on the safer hillside location after multiple destructions by English forces and Huguenots during the religious wars.
During World War II, the church suffered significant damage but survived the bombing raids that devastated much of Le Tréport. Its strategic hilltop position, while making it visible for miles, ironically helped protect the town below as bombers used it as a navigation landmark rather than a target.
The church's connection to the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage is deeply symbolic - Saint Jacques (Saint James) is the patron saint of pilgrims, and Le Tréport served as an important stopover point for medieval pilgrims traveling from England and Northern Europe to the famous shrine in Spain.
