About Le Tréport Cliffs

The Le Tréport Cliffs are spectacular white chalk cliffs rising 100-110 meters above the English Channel, marking the highest point and northeastern terminus of Normandy's famous Alabaster Coast. These geological marvels, formed from 100-million-year-old marine sediments during the Cretaceous period, are part of the same chalk formation as the White Cliffs of Dover. Visitors can reach the cliff tops via a unique free automated funicular that tunnels directly through the rock in under two minutes, or by climbing 378 steps from the old town hall. From the Calvaire des Terrasses viewpoint at the top, panoramic views stretch from the Somme estuary in the north to the Bresle Valley, overlooking the Three Sister Cities of Le Tréport, Mers-les-Bains, and Eu. The cliffs serve as a gateway to the GR21 coastal hiking trail, which follows the entire Alabaster Coast. Access is completely free, though parking at the top incurs a small fee during summer months and weekends.

Interesting Facts

The cliffs erode at a rate of 10-50 centimeters per year, typically through sudden dramatic collapses rather than gradual wear. This ongoing erosion constantly reshapes the coastline, creating new geological features while claiming parts of the cliff edge - visitors should always stay behind safety barriers.
The illuminated cross (Calvaire) at the cliff top was erected in 1887 following a tragic shipwreck in 1856 that devastated the local fishing community. Today it serves as both a memorial and a navigational landmark for sailors, its lights visible far out to sea each night.
The funicular is an engineering marvel featuring four glass cabins that operate like elevators - completely automated and available on-demand. First installed in 1908, it was destroyed during World War II and rebuilt in 2006 with modern transparent cabins that offer stunning views during the 1-minute-55-second journey through two tunnels carved directly into the chalk.
