Le Tréport Beach
About Le Tréport Beach
Le Tréport Beach is an 800-meter pebble beach stretching beneath the highest chalk cliffs in Europe, reaching 110 meters in height. At low tide, the sea retreats up to 300 meters, revealing a vast sandy expanse perfect for walks and beach activities. The beach marks the end of the famous Côte d'Albâtre (Alabaster Coast), a stunning 130-kilometer stretch of white cliffs extending to Le Havre. Visitors can enjoy swimming in supervised areas during summer, rent traditional beach cabins, or take the free historic funicular railway through the cliff to the panoramic viewpoint above. The working fishing port adjacent to the beach creates an authentic maritime atmosphere, with fresh seafood restaurants lining the waterfront. Check tide schedules before visiting to enjoy the sandy beach at low tide, and note that supervised swimming is only available during summer months.
Interesting Facts
The seawater at Le Tréport has a distinctive milky white color caused by chalk continuously dissolving from the towering cliffs into the ocean. This natural phenomenon has been occurring for thousands of years and gives the coastal waters their unique alabaster appearance, which is how the Côte d'Albâtre got its name.
The free funicular railway that connects the beach to the clifftop has been operating since 1908, making it over a century old. The tunnel was carved directly through the chalk cliff and offers a unique 5-minute journey through the heart of the rock, emerging at a panoramic terrace 110 meters above sea level.
During World War II, German forces built an extensive fortified bunker complex called the Kahl Burg inside the cliff, featuring 4 levels and stretching 270 meters through the rock as part of the Atlantic Wall defenses. Today, visitors can explore parts of this underground fortress and learn about its wartime history.
