About Chapel of the Jesuit College (Chapelle du Collège des Jésuites)

The Chapel of the Jesuit College is a stunning 17th-century religious monument built between 1612 and 1624 in the distinctive Louis XIII style blending Renaissance and Baroque influences. Founded by Henri de Lorraine, Duke of Guise, and his wife Catherine de Clèves, Countess of Eu, the chapel was dedicated to Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus. The remarkable facade features symmetrical architecture with two flanking towers and superimposed classical orders, while the interior showcases a four-bay nave with Gothic vaulting and elegant brick-and-stone construction inspired by Jesuit churches in Rome. The choir houses two magnificent marble mausoleums with double figuration (praying and reclining effigies) of Catherine de Clèves and her husband - though the Duke's monument is only a cenotaph, as his body was burned after his assassination in 1588. Classified as a Historic Monument since 1846, the chapel has been deconsecrated and now serves as a cultural venue hosting art exhibitions and events. The building is open seasonally from March to November with free admission, featuring extended summer hours.

Interesting Facts

The Duke of Guise, known as 'le Balafré' (the Scarred) due to a prominent facial scar from battle, was assassinated at the Château de Blois on December 23, 1588, on orders of King Henri III. His body was burned and his ashes scattered in the Loire River, making his elaborate marble monument in the chapel merely a cenotaph - an empty tomb honoring someone buried elsewhere.
The chapel's construction was inspired by the Church of the Gesù in Rome, the mother church of the Jesuit order, making it one of the earliest examples of 'Jesuit style' architecture in Normandy. This style deliberately blended Renaissance symmetry with emerging Baroque drama to create impressive spaces for Counter-Reformation worship.
