About Collegiate Church of Our Lady and Saint Lawrence (Collégiale Notre-Dame et Saint-Laurent)

A magnificent medieval collegiate church dating from the 12th-13th century, showcasing exceptional Gothic architecture. This historic landmark contains the tombs of the Counts of Eu and stands as a testament to Norman religious heritage. The church features intricate stone work, soaring Gothic vaults, and important religious artwork spanning centuries.

Interesting Facts

The church was built specifically because Irish Archbishop Saint Laurent O'Toole died unexpectedly in Eu on November 14, 1180, during a diplomatic mission. His death sparked an immediate devotional cult, leading to his canonization in 1248. The entire collegiate church (built 1186-1240) was constructed primarily to house his tomb and accommodate the pilgrims who flocked to venerate him.
The famous architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, who also restored Notre-Dame de Paris, said of this church: 'I have seen larger, I have seen higher, but I have never seen more beautiful.' He personally directed the restoration work from 1864-1876, adding buttresses to the north and south facades.
The church's 31-meter-long crypt was called 'the Saint-Denis of Normandy' by historian Abbé Cochet, comparing it to the royal necropolis near Paris. It contains exquisite marble effigies of the Artois family, considered masterpieces of late medieval sculpture. Tragically, during the French Revolution, the tombs were violently thrown down into the crypt through the side windows in an act of destructive vandalism.
The magnificent organ, created in 1614 by master organ-builder Louis Isoré from Abbeville, features 3 keyboards, 36 stops, and 2,745 pipes. It was later restored by the prestigious Cavaillé-Coll house in the 19th century and is itself classified as a historic monument.
