Veules-les-Roses Beach
About Veules-les-Roses Beach
Veules-les-Roses Beach is a charming mixed pebble and sand beach nestled between dramatic white chalk cliffs on Normandy's Alabaster Coast. The beach is particularly unique because France's shortest river, La Veules (just 1,149 meters long), flows directly into the sea at its center. At low tide, fine sand emerges making it ideal for families with children, while a free paddling pool with slides and a playground add to its family-friendly appeal. The beach maintains an active fishing tradition with boats pulled onto shore by tractors, allowing visitors to buy ultra-fresh seafood directly from fishermen. Local specialty oysters called 'Les Veulaises' are cultivated at the foot of the cliffs and served at nearby restaurants. Free entry with ample parking nearby, though spaces fill quickly during summer weekends. Lifeguard supervision is provided in July and August. For the best experience, combine a beach visit with the scenic 1.5-hour walking circuit along the Veules river through the village, passing historic watermills and watercress beds.
Interesting Facts
Victor Hugo, the legendary author of Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, vacationed here four times. His favorite activity was walking along the riverbank, and he had a special 'grotto' on the coast where he sat contemplating the sea. In September 1882, Hugo organized a memorable banquet for the village's 100 poorest children, giving gifts and money to all - he declared that 'the raffle had only winning tickets.'
For over 600 years since the 14th century, watercress has been cultivated in the pure chalk waters of the Veules river. The unique mineral composition gives it a distinctive, milder flavor prized by Parisian gourmets. Today, 2-3 working cressonnières (watercress beds) still produce approximately 4.3 tons annually.
At its peak, 10-11 watermills operated along the tiny 1.2km Veules river - averaging one mill every 100 meters! They processed wheat, extracted colza oil, and fulled linen for weavers. Four historic mills still stand today, including Moulin Saint-Martin documented since 1385.
