La Veules River
About La Veules River
La Veules holds the remarkable distinction of being France's shortest coastal river, flowing just 1,149 meters from its source to the English Channel. Despite its diminutive length, it's classified as a true river (fleuve) because it empties directly into the sea. The river meanders through Veules-les-Roses, one of France's Most Beautiful Villages, passing historic watermills dating from the 17th century, traditional Norman thatched cottages, and active watercress beds where you can still see farmers harvesting by hand. A well-marked walking circuit of about 3 kilometers follows the river with 17 interpretive panels explaining the area's heritage. The walk takes approximately one hour and is suitable for all fitness levels. The river maintains remarkably constant flow year-round due to chalk aquifer springs, making it visitable in any season.
Interesting Facts
The name 'Veules' first appeared as 'Wellas' in a document from 1025, derived from Old English words 'wella' or 'wiella' meaning 'source' or 'fountain'. This Anglo-Saxon etymology reveals the area's connection to the Viking settlements in Normandy during the 9th and 10th centuries.
In the 19th century, Veules-les-Roses became a fashionable retreat for Parisian intellectuals and artists. Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, and historian Jules Michelet all stayed here, drawn by the picturesque river and village atmosphere. This literary heritage helped establish the village's reputation as a cultural destination.
Despite being only 1.1 kilometers long, La Veules once powered approximately 10 watermills—that's one mill every 100 meters! These mills, built from the 17th century onwards, were used for grinding wheat, pressing rapeseed for oil, and fulling flax for textile production. Today, the Moulin des Aïeux still has its complete original equipment restored in 2002.
