About Vernon Museum (Musée de Vernon)

The Musée Blanche Hoschedé-Monet, housed in a rare 15th-18th century mansion that survived the 1944 bombings, is the only museum in the Vernon-Giverny area with original Claude Monet paintings. The collection features two Monet works including a circular "Water Lilies" tondo gifted by the artist himself in 1925, alongside the world's largest public collection of works by Blanche Hoschedé-Monet, his stepdaughter and only student. The museum also showcases important Nabis movement paintings by Pierre Bonnard, Félix Vallotton, and Maurice Denis, plus an exceptional Steinlen collection from Montmartre's Belle Époque era. Located just 5 km from Monet's famous gardens at Giverny, this intimate museum offers a deeper understanding of the Impressionist movement through works by artists who lived and painted in this inspiring Norman landscape. Free entry for visitors under 26 and on the first Sunday of each month. The museum closes for lunch between 12:30 and 14:00, and winter hours are shorter (closing at 17:00 from November to March).

Interesting Facts

The museum has fascinating origins as a natural history collection. In 1862, François de Brécourt donated approximately 2,000 naturalized bird specimens from Normandy and distant lands, establishing the museum's foundation. This ornithological heritage continues today through the museum's unique animal art collection, which includes prestigious deposits from the Louvre and Musée d'Orsay.
Blanche Hoschedé-Monet had an extraordinary double connection to Claude Monet - she was simultaneously his stepdaughter (her mother Alice married Monet in 1892) AND his daughter-in-law (she married Monet's son Jean in 1897). She began painting alongside Monet at age 17 and remained his devoted assistant until his death in 1926, becoming the only person he ever accepted as a student.
The Nabis painter Pierre Bonnard specifically chose Vernon as a partial residence from 1912 because he was captivated by the area's 'very changeable light' - the same atmospheric quality that had drawn Claude Monet to nearby Giverny decades earlier. The museum's two Bonnard Seine landscapes capture this unique Norman light that inspired generations of artists.
