The Old Mill (Le Vieux Moulin)
About The Old Mill (Le Vieux Moulin)
Le Vieux Moulin is a picturesque 16th-century half-timbered mill perched on the piers of a medieval bridge over the Seine River in Vernon, Normandy. This iconic landmark is the last survivor of five water mills that once operated on the 12th-century bridge built under King Philippe Auguste. The mill functioned until 1849 using an ingenious hanging wheel system that adapted to the Seine's variable water levels. Claude Monet immortalized this scene in his 1883 painting shortly after moving to nearby Giverny, making it a must-see for art lovers following the Impressionist trail. The mill can only be viewed from the exterior as it remains privately owned, with the best vantage points from Clemenceau Bridge or the Château des Tourelles park. Interior visits are exceptionally rare, available only during European Heritage Days in September. Located just 6 km from Monet's famous gardens at Giverny, the Old Mill makes for a perfect photo stop when exploring this artistic corner of Normandy.
Interesting Facts
The painting Claude Monet created of this mill in 1883, titled 'Houses on the Old Bridge at Vernon,' now hangs in the New Orleans Museum of Art in Louisiana, USA. It was one of the first subjects Monet painted after moving to Giverny, just weeks after arriving in April 1883.
In 1925, French composer Jean Nouguès purchased the mill and added an unusual feature: a floating dance hall on a barge moored alongside. The barge unfortunately sank in 1927, ending Vernon's most eccentric riverside entertainment venue after just two years.
The mill survived both World Wars despite heavy bombing in 1940 and 1944 that destroyed the medieval bridge it stood on. After being abandoned and nearly collapsing, the City of Vernon invested 2 million francs to save this architectural treasure, though it remains privately owned to this day.
