About Tatihou Island

Tatihou Island sits 1 kilometer off Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue in the Cotentin Peninsula, accessible by amphibious boat or on foot at low tide. The 28-hectare island houses the Vauban Tower, built in 1694 as part of the coastal defense system and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. The Maritime Museum, located in the former 18th-century quarantine station (lazaret), displays archaeological artifacts from the 1692 Battle of La Hougue when Anglo-Dutch forces destroyed French warships in the bay. Visitors can explore botanical gardens featuring over 100 plant species, an ornithological reserve with 150 bird species, and a traditional boat-building workshop. The island opens late February through early November with a daily limit of 500 visitors. Book tickets in advance, especially during summer months, and check tide schedules as crossing times vary.

Interesting Facts

The amphibious boat Tatihou III is one of the most unusual ferry services in France. Equipped with both a propeller and wheels, it sails through the water at high tide but drives along the seabed when the tide drops, switching seamlessly between marine and land vehicle as conditions change during the 5-15 minute crossing.
From 1882 to 1923, the island served as a marine biology research station for the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. Scientists studying the rich tidal ecosystems conducted pioneering research here that contributed to our understanding of Channel marine life.
The 1692 Battle of La Hougue was a turning point in naval warfare. French Admiral Tourville's fleet of 44 ships faced 99 Anglo-Dutch vessels. After the French defeat at Barfleur, 12 warships retreated to the bay where they were systematically destroyed by fireships over three days while Louis XIV watched helplessly from shore.
