Saint-Valery-en-Caux Lighthouse (Phare de Saint-Valery-en-Caux)
About Saint-Valery-en-Caux Lighthouse (Phare de Saint-Valery-en-Caux)
The Phare de Saint-Valery-en-Caux is a charming 12-meter cylindrical lighthouse standing at the end of the western jetty at the entrance to Saint-Valery-en-Caux harbor. Built in 1882 to replace an earlier square brick tower from 1830, this white masonry lighthouse with its distinctive green lantern has guided vessels safely into port for over 140 years. The lighthouse remains fully operational today, its white light flashing every 30 seconds with a range of up to 11 nautical miles. While the interior is not open to visitors, the lighthouse is easily viewed during a pleasant walk along the jetty, offering lovely views of the harbor and coastline. It works in tandem with a historic red light on the opposite eastern jetty, creating a twin-light navigation system that helps mariners safely enter the port.
Interesting Facts
The French National Archives preserve detailed architectural plans of the lighthouse dating from 1829 to 1882, documenting the evolution from the original square brick tower to the current cylindrical design. These historical documents, referenced as CP/F/14/17526/2 and CP/F/14/17526/16, show how maritime safety engineering progressed over nearly a century.
The lighthouse's green lantern is not just decorative — it serves as a crucial navigation marker. In maritime convention, green indicates starboard (right side), so vessels entering the port know to keep this lighthouse on their right. This color-coded system, paired with a red light on the opposite jetty, creates an intuitive visual guide that has prevented countless accidents.
