About Saint-Valery-en-Caux Beach (Plage de Saint-Valery-en-Caux)

Saint-Valery-en-Caux Beach is a picturesque pebble beach on Normandy's famous Alabaster Coast (Côte d'Albâtre), dramatically framed by towering white chalk cliffs. The beach is composed of distinctive 'galets cauchois' - smooth silica pebbles unique to this coastline - with sandy areas exposed at low tide. Visitors can enjoy two separate beach areas on either side of the charming working fishing port and marina. Summer facilities include lifeguard supervision (July-August only), showers, toilets, playgrounds, sports courts for volleyball and pétanque, and a paddling pool for children. A scenic jetty walk leads to the lighthouse with panoramic views of the dramatic Amont and Aval cliffs. The town has a rich history as a Belle Époque seaside resort that attracted literary figures like Victor Hugo, who was inspired to write his famous poem 'Oceano Nox' after witnessing a storm here in 1836. Water shoes are recommended due to the large pebbles, and visitors should note that lifeguard supervision is only available during July and August.

Interesting Facts

Until 1974, Saint-Valery-en-Caux had a thriving industry harvesting the famous 'galets cauchois' pebbles, prized for their exceptional silica purity. Workers collected, sorted, and exported these smooth stones by boat for use in ceramics and industrial applications. Today, pebble collection is strictly prohibited as they form a crucial natural barrier protecting the coastline from erosion.
In June 1940, Saint-Valery-en-Caux witnessed one of the most dramatic moments of World War II when the British 51st Highland Division and French troops were encircled by Rommel's forces. Unlike the Dunkirk evacuation, rescue was impossible as German artillery on the Amont cliffs could sink any approaching ships. Over 12,000 Allied soldiers were captured, and more than 70% of the town was destroyed in the battle.
The town has earned the prestigious '4 flowers' rating - the maximum possible - in the French 'Villes et Villages Fleuris' competition, recognizing its exceptional floral displays and green spaces that have transformed this rebuilt post-war town into one of Normandy's most beautiful seaside destinations.
