About Saint-Sauveur Church (Église Saint-Sauveur)

The Église Saint-Sauveur is a Gothic parish church built between 1220-1350, originally constructed to serve workers building Richard the Lionheart's Château Gaillard fortress. The church features a rare Greek cross floor plan with four equal branches of 29 meters each, and a distinctive 47-meter wooden spire that defines the Petit-Andely neighborhood skyline. Inside, visitors can admire the 1674 Ingout organ - one of the oldest functioning organs in France - along with 13th-century sculptures, 16th-century frescoes in the choir, and a magnificent Louis XIV altarpiece from the Abbaye de Mortemer. Classified as a Monument Historique since 1840, making it one of France's earliest protected monuments, the church remarkably survived the 1203 siege during which Philippe Auguste ordered the village burned but the church spared. Entry is free and the church is open daily for self-guided visits, with guided group tours available through the tourism office.

Interesting Facts

At the entrance to the choir, look up to find two carved stone faces on opposing pillars - one laughing and one crying. These medieval sculptures are believed to represent the duality of human emotion, and have gazed down at worshippers for over 700 years.
The church's distinctive 47-meter wooden spire was completely destroyed during a violent storm in 1973. It was meticulously rebuilt to match the original design, preserving the iconic silhouette that has defined the Petit-Andely neighborhood since the Middle Ages.
During the French Revolution, the church was stripped of its religious function and converted into a warehouse for storing iron and lead. The Ingout organ survived this period hidden and protected, only to be restored to use when the church reopened for worship after the Revolutionary period.
