About Michel Ciry Museum (Musée Michel Ciry)

The Musée Michel Ciry is a 650m² art museum dedicated entirely to the work of Michel Ciry (1919-2018), a renowned French painter, engraver, composer, and writer who lived and worked in Varengeville-sur-Mer for over 50 years. The museum was designed and financed by the artist himself in 2012, built as an extension of La Bergerie, his private residence and studio. Visitors can admire approximately 150 works including paintings, watercolors, engravings, and drawings that span 40 years of artistic creation. The collection features 64 paintings exhibited in rotation, showcasing Ciry's masterful figurative style with religious themes and Norman landscapes. A 2021 expansion added the 'Espace Créations' wing hosting temporary exhibitions and concerts. The museum is open seasonally from April to November, with daily hours (except Tuesdays) during peak season and weekends only in shoulder months. Groups can arrange visits during winter by prior reservation.

Interesting Facts

Michel Ciry was a true Renaissance man who excelled in multiple artistic disciplines simultaneously. Beyond painting and engraving, he studied musical composition under Nadia Boulanger, one of the 20th century's most influential music teachers who also taught Aaron Copland, Philip Glass, and Quincy Jones. Ciry composed religious musical works including a 'Symphonie sacrée' until 1958.
Ciry began his artistic journey remarkably early, creating his first copper engraving at just 16 years old in 1935. He went on to become a member of the prestigious Société des Peintres-Graveurs Français by age 22. His mastery of engraving became his signature medium, with critics praising his rich black nuances and technical precision.
Michel Ciry documented his entire creative life in an extraordinary literary project: 36 volumes of daily journals that he began writing in 1942 and continued throughout his life. These diaries provide an intimate window into the mind of an artist who lived to 99 years old, working in his Normandy studio until his final years in 2018.
