About Jungle Garden (Jardin Jungle)

Jardin Jungle Karlostachys is an extraordinary 15-hectare wild exotic garden created by botanist Charles Boulanger in 1994, featuring over 7,000 plant species from China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Brazil, Australia, and New Zealand. The garden houses one of France's most impressive bamboo collections with over 300 species, including rare giant bamboos reaching 13 meters in height, alongside sequoias, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, and unique botanical specimens found nowhere else in Europe. Three distinct areas await visitors: an arboretum of rare trees, an extensive bamboo garden, and an enclosed garden showcasing hydrangeas and exotic vines. The garden follows a strict ecological approach with zero chemicals - no pesticides, fertilizers, or fungicides - pioneering restorative ecology that integrates exotic plants into the local ecosystem. Visits are by guided tour only, led personally by the creator Charles Boulanger, who shares his encyclopedic knowledge and fascinating anecdotes about each plant's origin and characteristics. Book in advance as tours require a minimum of 5 adults; be prepared with boots and rain gear as the wild garden terrain can be muddy, and note that the site is not wheelchair accessible.

Interesting Facts

The name 'Karlostachys' is a clever portmanteau combining 'Karlos' (Charles, the creator's name) with 'Stachys' (from Phyllostachys, the Latin name for bamboo). Charles Boulanger spent 4 years working under the bamboos at the famous Bambouseraie d'Anduze before creating his own garden, and this unique name pays homage to that formative experience.
During summer, the giant bamboos in the garden can grow an astonishing 10 meters in just 2 weeks - you can almost watch them grow! This explosive growth rate makes summer visits particularly spectacular, as the bamboo forest transforms visibly between visits just weeks apart.
The concept of 'Jardin Jungle' was actually invented at this very location in 1990, making it the birthplace of this gardening philosophy. Charles Boulanger pioneered the idea of creating gardens that are 'more welcoming to life' - blending exotic species with local ecosystems rather than isolating them in traditional garden beds.
