Jardin Shamrock
About Jardin Shamrock
Jardin Shamrock is the world's largest and most important collection of hydrangeas, holding the prestigious National Collection label from CCVS (Conservatoire des Collections Végétales Spécialisées). Founded in 1984 by Corinne Mallet, the 2-hectare English-style botanical garden features over 2,000 varieties from 70 different species, collected from Europe, Japan, China, and America. The garden is organized into three distinct zones: Le Bois du Dragon Vert (Green Dragon Wood) with shade-loving Asian species, Le Jardin Céleste (Celestial Garden) with sun-loving varieties in crop circle patterns, and Le Labyrinthe where beds are dedicated to specific breeders by country. Awarded the 'Jardin Remarquable' label in 2015, Shamrock preserves rare and endangered hydrangea species not found elsewhere in Europe. The garden is only open seasonally from late June to early September, with peak blooming in July and August. Dogs on leashes are welcome, and free parking is available on site.
Interesting Facts
Corinne Mallet made five expeditions to Japan between 1992 and 2000, including a two-month journey in 1993 where she became the disciple of Takeomi Yamamoto, Japan's leading hydrangea specialist. This unique apprenticeship gave her access to rare varieties and traditional cultivation knowledge that shaped the collection's exceptional diversity.
The garden had to be moved four times before finding its permanent home near the historic Manoir d'Ango in winter 2000-2001. Each relocation was carefully planned to preserve the precious plants, with some specimens now reaching heights of nearly 5 meters after decades of growth.
Corinne Mallet is married to Robert Mallet, whose grandfather Guillaume Mallet created the famous Bois des Moutiers park nearby. This family connection to Normandy's horticultural heritage spans three generations and has made Varengeville-sur-Mer an internationally recognized destination for garden enthusiasts.
