About Container Chain

The Catène de Containers (Container Chain) is a monumental contemporary sculpture by French artist Vincent Ganivet, standing 28.5 meters high and weighing 288 tonnes. Created in 2017 to celebrate Le Havre's 500th anniversary, the artwork consists of 36 colorful shipping containers arranged in two interlocking arches using the catenary principle—the same engineering technique employed by Antoni Gaudí. The structure stands without glue, welding, or external support, relying solely on gravitational equilibrium. Positioned on Southampton Quay near the cruise terminal, it forms a symbolic gateway between the city and France's busiest container port. Originally planned as a temporary installation for the 'Un été au Havre' festival, the sculpture became so beloved that residents petitioned to make it permanent. The installation is freely accessible 24 hours a day and is particularly striking when illuminated at night.

Interesting Facts

The sculpture uses the same catenary principle that Antoni Gaudí employed at the Sagrada Família in Barcelona. When a chain hangs freely between two points, it forms a natural curve called a catenary. Inverted, this curve creates a perfect arch that supports its own weight through pure compression—no external support needed.
Official miniature replicas of the Catène de Containers have been sold since February 2022 for €69 each. The proceeds go toward heritage preservation projects in Le Havre, and the miniatures have proven so popular that they've become collectible souvenirs of the city.
The name 'Catène' has a clever double meaning: it comes from the Latin 'catena' meaning chain, referencing both the engineering principle used in the structure AND the global supply chain that container ships and ports represent—a perfect wordplay for a port city sculpture.
