WN 62 (Widerstandsnest 62)
About WN 62 (Widerstandsnest 62)
WN 62 (Widerstandsnest 62) was the most heavily defended German strongpoint on Omaha Beach during the D-Day landings of June 6, 1944. Built as part of the Atlantic Wall fortifications, this resistance nest covered an area of 330 by 324 meters on a plateau 15-50 meters above sea level, providing a commanding view of the entire beach. The garrison of 40 soldiers operated two concrete casemates, a 75mm artillery gun, anti-tank weapons, mortars, and multiple machine guns. Today visitors can explore the preserved bunker remains, trench networks, and two memorial monuments honoring the 1st US Army and 5th Special Engineer Brigade. The site is freely accessible around the clock with no entrance fee. Access is via a short path from the Normandy American Cemetery parking lot. Best visited in combination with the adjacent American Cemetery for full historical context.
Interesting Facts
Technical Sergeant Philip Streczyk of the 16th Infantry Regiment led the first successful assault through WN 62's defenses at 08:25 on D-Day. For his actions breaking through the German lines under heavy fire, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, one of the highest military decorations.
German soldier Heinrich Severloh, stationed at WN 62, later claimed in his memoirs to have fired over 12,000 rounds and caused 1,000-2,000 American casualties. Historians consider these numbers significantly exaggerated, as total Allied casualties across all of Omaha Beach were approximately 2,400.
The strongpoint was protected by a sophisticated anti-tank ditch measuring 4 meters wide and 1.70 meters deep, combined with extensive barbed wire networks. These obstacles forced American soldiers to advance on foot under direct machine gun fire from the elevated bunker positions.
