Utah Beach
About Utah Beach
Utah Beach was the westernmost of the five Normandy landing beaches during D-Day on June 6, 1944. American forces from the 4th Infantry Division landed here at 6:30 AM, supported by 14,000 paratroopers from the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions who had dropped inland overnight. Strong currents pushed the landing craft 1,800 meters east of the planned zone, accidentally placing troops at a less-defended sector which contributed to lower casualties than expected. The beach museum, established in 1962 by local mayor Michel de Vallavieille, occupies the site of German strongpoint W5 and houses a B-26 Marauder bomber as its centerpiece. The 3,000 square meter exhibition traces the preparation and execution of the Utah Beach landing through original equipment, personal testimonies, and interactive displays. The beach itself remains freely accessible year-round and marks the starting point of the Voie de la Liberté (Freedom Trail) that traces the Allied advance through France.
Interesting Facts
The museum's founder, Michel de Vallavieille, was accidentally wounded by American fire on D-Day as a teenager. He was treated by American military nurses who had just landed on the beach. Despite his injury, he held no resentment and dedicated his life to honoring the Allied liberators, opening the museum on the 18th anniversary of D-Day in 1962.
The B-26 Marauder bomber displayed in the museum is one of only a handful of intact examples remaining worldwide. This twin-engine aircraft was critical to the success of D-Day operations, providing tactical bombing support that neutralized German defenses before the beach landings.
During World War II, German forces converted the coastal dunes into fortified positions. The museum building incorporates the original concrete bunker of strongpoint W5, allowing visitors to walk through the same structure that German defenders occupied on June 6, 1944.
