About Umbrella Manufactory of Cherbourg (Manufacture des Parapluies de Cherbourg)

This working umbrella factory was founded in 1986 by Jean-Pierre Yvon, whose family has been leather craftsmen in Cherbourg since 1800. Housed in the former Banque de France building on Quai Alexandre III facing the port, the manufactory produces handcrafted umbrellas through 47 precise steps using traditional techniques. Visitors can observe seamstresses at work through large windows, explore the museum showcasing the brand's history and exceptional pieces created for luxury houses like Cartier and Moët & Chandon, and watch a film about the craft in the cinema room. The name pays tribute to Jacques Demy's 1964 Palme d'Or winning film "Les Parapluies de Cherbourg" starring Catherine Deneuve. The boutique sells high-quality umbrellas ranging from €95 to €240, and the business holds the "Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant" (Living Heritage Company) label recognizing exceptional French craftsmanship.

Interesting Facts

A Japanese manufacturer was so impressed by the Cherbourg umbrellas that they purchased the license in the early 1990s and opened their own factory in Japan, making it one of the few French artisanal techniques exported to Japan rather than the other way around.
Creating a new umbrella model can take anywhere from 1 month to 2 years of development, depending on the complexity of the design and materials. The manufacture has no formal training program to follow - they train all their artisans in-house because no national school teaches umbrella-making in France.
The manufacture tests its umbrellas in wind tunnels to ensure durability. Each umbrella is designed to withstand strong winds without inverting, a common problem with mass-produced umbrellas that the 47-step handcrafting process specifically addresses.
