Trouville Lighthouse and Jetty (Phare de Trouville)
About Trouville Lighthouse and Jetty (Phare de Trouville)
The Trouville Lighthouse stands at the end of the Jean-Claude Brize Jetty, marking the eastern entrance to the ports of Trouville and Deauville. The original lighthouse dates from 1860 and was designed as part of a series of prefabricated metal lighthouses associated with Gustave Eiffel's engineering innovations. The current structure is a post-World War II reconstruction completed in 1964 after the original was destroyed during the war. The octagonal metal tower rises 11 meters above sea level, painted white with a distinctive red lantern gallery, while its twin across the channel in Deauville features a green top following international maritime marking standards. The jetty offers excellent views of the English Channel, the beach, and passing boats. Visitors can walk freely along the wooden jetty at any time, though the lighthouse interior is not open to the public. Best visited at sunset for dramatic coastal views and photography.
Interesting Facts
In 1868, Gustave Eiffel partnered with engineer Louis Sautter to patent improvements in iron lighthouse tower construction. The Trouville lighthouse belongs to a series of prefabricated metal lighthouses from this collaboration. Of the twelve small metal lighthouses Eiffel was commissioned to build for the French coast, only five examples of this type remain standing today.
The red top of the Trouville lighthouse and the green top of the Deauville lighthouse across the channel follow the international IALA maritime buoyage system. Red marks the port (left) side when entering a harbor, while green marks starboard (right). Ships entering the channel between Trouville and Deauville use these colored lights to navigate safely at night.
The jetty was renamed in 2012 to honor Jean-Claude Brize, a legendary fishing figure in Trouville-sur-Mer who passed away that year. Before its renaming, it was simply known as the East Jetty. The wooden walkway stretches into the English Channel and has become one of Normandy's most photographed coastal spots.
