About The Washhouse of Gisors (Le Lavoir de Gisors)

The Washhouse of Gisors is a remarkable 15th-century public laundry built on the banks of the Epte River in the heart of the historic town. This protected monument, registered as a Historic Monument since 1927, features an impressive curved arcade supported by 16 wooden pillars that follow the natural bend of the river. The structure combines limestone foundations with a traditional slate roof, creating a picturesque covered passage along the waterfront. Historically, the washhouse served as both a practical facility for doing laundry and an important social gathering place where local women exchanged news and gossip. The Epte River itself holds great historical significance, having served as the border between Normandy and the Kingdom of France since the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte in 911 AD. Today, visitors can freely access this charming heritage site as part of a walking circuit that includes the nearby medieval château and fortifications. The washhouse offers a pleasant stop along the water and serves as a reminder of the river's vital role in the town's daily life for centuries.

Interesting Facts

In January 2025, the Epte River experienced a historic flood that raised water levels to 51.54 meters NGF - a remarkable 44 centimeters above the washhouse platform. A commemorative plaque was installed on June 4, 2025 to mark this exceptional event, making visitors today witnesses to both medieval history and recent natural phenomena.
Public washhouses like this one remained in active daily use until the 1950s, when they were gradually replaced by washtubs and eventually washing machines. For nearly 500 years, generations of Gisors women gathered here regularly, making the washhouse one of the longest continuously used public utilities in the town's history.
