The Washhouse of Gisors (Le Lavoir de Gisors)

The Washhouse of Gisors is a remarkable 15th-century public laundry built on the banks of the Epte River in the heart of the historic town. This protected monument, registered as a Historic Monument since 1927, features an impressive curved arcade supported by 16 wooden pillars that follow the natural bend of the river. The structure combines limestone foundations with a traditional slate roof, creating a picturesque covered passage along the waterfront. Historically, the washhouse served as both a practical facility for doing laundry and an important social gathering place where local women exchanged news and gossip. The Epte River itself holds great historical significance, having served as the border between Normandy and the Kingdom of France since the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte in 911 AD. Today, visitors can freely access this charming heritage site as part of a walking circuit that includes the nearby medieval château and fortifications.
