About The Mill of Vimoutiers (Le Moulin de Vimoutiers)

A working 14th-century watermill on the river La Vie, one of the last operational flour mills in Normandy. First documented in 1336 as a tanning mill for local leather workshops, it was converted to grain milling and rebuilt after World War II bombing. The half-timbered building retains all original equipment including millstones, grain separator, flour sifter, kneading trough, and a wood-fired bread oven. A Francis turbine installed in 1928 still powers the mechanism at 110 revolutions per minute. The last professional miller stopped grinding in 1995, but current owners Yvette and Jean Brêteau demonstrate the mill during visits. Open by reservation year-round, with special demonstrations during Mill Days in June and Heritage Days in September. Entry is free with donations welcome. Pets allowed and picnic area available.

Interesting Facts

The mill's water rights date back to 1336 and were officially reconfirmed by King Louis Philippe in 1847, making them among the oldest continuously documented water usage rights in the Orne department. These medieval rights still legally govern how water from the La Vie river can be used by the property.
Jean Brêteau, the current owner, worked as the mill's professional miller for 40 years before retiring in 1995. He is one of the few living people in France who can demonstrate traditional milling techniques passed down through generations of Norman millers.
The Francis turbine installed in 1928 generates 17.4 horsepower, enough to power not just the millstones but the entire mechanical system including the grain elevator, separator, and flour sifter. This type of reaction turbine was revolutionary for small-scale water power in rural France.
