About Saint-Michel Church (Saint-Michel Church)
Saint-Michel Church stands in the heart of Cabourg, blending Neo-Gothic and Neo-Norman architectural styles in a rare combination for French religious buildings. Built in 1850-1851 by architect Michel Pelfresne, the church was significantly modified in the 1920s when a half-timbered Anglo-Norman bell tower replaced the original spire after it collapsed in 1927. The interior features a nave with oak framework, five apsidal chapels, and vivid stained glass windows restored after World War II. A notable treasure is the 1898 Cavaillé-Coll salon organ, installed in 1939 and considered a masterpiece by France's most celebrated organ builder. At the entrance, two statues of Saint-Michel and Saint-Nicolas date back to the original 12th-century Romanesque church, making them over 800 years old. The church is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00 with free admission. Guided tours with live organ demonstrations are available without reservation.
Interesting Facts
The church has been rebuilt multiple times and even physically relocated within the commune of Cabourg over its history. The current building represents the third major iteration of the parish church, each in a radically different architectural style.
Despite Marcel Proust's famous stays in Cabourg between 1907 and 1914 at the Grand Hôtel, this church did not inspire his literary work. The church at nearby Dives-sur-Mer instead became the model for 'Balbec-le-Vieux' in his novels.
In the 1920s, part of the nave was specifically raised higher to accommodate the large Cavaillé-Coll organ, creating an unusual architectural modification topped with a remarkable oak framework that remains visible today.
