About Reporters Memorial

The Reporters Memorial is a landscaped garden dedicated to journalists killed while reporting from conflict zones worldwide. Opened in 2007, it was created through a partnership between the City of Bayeux and Reporters Without Borders, making it the first memorial of its kind in the world. The site features 27 white marble steles along winding pathways through a wooded area, with over 2,100 names engraved chronologically by year of death, starting from 1944. A 2016 addition at the entrance shows a silhouette of a photographer, honoring reporters whose bodies were never found. Located next to the British War Cemetery, the memorial connects the sacrifice of war correspondents to the nearby D-Day landing sites. New names are added each October during the Prix Bayeux-Calvados ceremony for war correspondents. The outdoor memorial is freely accessible year-round during daylight hours.

Interesting Facts

The memorial received the 2008 National Landscape Victory award and the 2010 Calvados Architecture and Development Award for its design by landscape architect Samuel Craquelin, who created curved white-flowering pathways through wooded clearings to evoke contemplation and peace.
Bayeux was chosen as the location because it was the first French city liberated after D-Day on June 7, 1944, and many of the first war correspondents to cover the Normandy landings filed their reports from here.
In October 2024, an olive tree was planted at the memorial specifically to honor journalists killed in Gaza, following one of the deadliest periods for press freedom in modern history with over 100 Palestinian journalists killed in the conflict.
