Our Lady of Victories Church (Eglise Notre-Dame-des-Victoires)
About Our Lady of Victories Church (Eglise Notre-Dame-des-Victoires)
This neoclassical church sits at the highest point of Trouville-sur-Mer, built between 1843 and 1848 during the town's transformation into a fashionable seaside resort. Designed by architect Desplen in a Latin cross plan, the building features Tuscan columns separating the nave from side aisles and an elaborate four-level facade with a decorated portal. The interior houses two exceptional Cavaillé-Coll organs from 1870 and 1894, considered among the finest examples of the renowned organ builder's work. Mid-20th century frescoes by Maurice Frébourg depict scenes from Christ's life and the Coronation of the Virgin Mary. Regular organ and piano concerts take place here. The church is currently undergoing a multi-year restoration program after receiving funding from the French Heritage Lottery in 2023, though it remains open daily for visitors.
Interesting Facts
The grand organ was reportedly played by the future Pope Pius X when he was still the Bishop of Mantua. The instrument was originally displayed as an exhibition piece before being installed in the church, and famous organist Louis Vierne presented it to the public.
German and American organ experts consider the 1894 choir organ one of the most exceptional surviving examples of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll's craftsmanship. The smaller instrument has only 9 stops but demonstrates the legendary builder's mastery of voicing and tonal design.
During the church's years of deterioration, water infiltration caused such severe damage that most of the building had to be covered with protective netting. Plaster completely disappeared from many areas, and the western facade lost several decorative elements before restoration funding arrived in 2023.
