Museum of Ethnography and Norman Popular Art (Musee d'Ethnographie et d'Art Populaire Normand)
About Museum of Ethnography and Norman Popular Art (Musee d'Ethnographie et d'Art Populaire Normand)
This ethnography museum occupies a 16th-century timber-framed house built around 1586-1587, which later served as the prison of the Vicomté de Roncheville. Founded in 1896 by the Société du Vieux-Honfleur, it was one of the first provincial ethnography museums in France. The self-guided tour leads through 9 furnished rooms recreating Norman life from the 16th to 20th centuries: a mercer's shop, cooper's workshop, weaver's room, printer's workshop, and domestic spaces including a bourgeois salon and sailor's dining room. Collections include traditional Norman furniture, costumes, distinctive regional headdresses (coiffes), and Pré-d'Auge faience pottery. The courtyard contains remnants of Honfleur's medieval fortifications. Note that hours vary seasonally and the museum closes during part of January.
Interesting Facts
The building was classified as a French Historic Monument (Monument Historique) on September 28, 1932, recognizing its architectural significance as one of the few remaining 16th-century timber-framed structures in Honfleur.
The museum's collections were initiated by Léon Leclerc (1866-1930), a local historian who founded the Société du Vieux-Honfleur. He spent decades gathering everyday objects, furniture, and costumes from Norman households before they disappeared with modernization.
This was one of the first ethnography museums established in provincial France, founded the same year as the famous Musée Arlaten in Arles (1896). Both institutions pioneered the preservation of regional folk culture and traditions.
