About Museum of Art and History (Musée d'Art et d'Histoire)

The Museum of Art and History occupies the Centre culturel Jean-Lurçat, a modern building inaugurated in 1989 after the original museum was destroyed during the 1944 bombardments that devastated 95% of Saint-Lô. The collection spans over 500 works across 300 square meters, featuring paintings from the 16th to 20th centuries by artists including Camille Corot, Jean-François Millet, Eugène Boudin, and Fernand Léger. A highlight is the collection of Bruges tapestries depicting peasant life scenes. The museum also houses the Marbre de Thorigny, a 1.5-ton Roman sandstone pedestal from 238 AD classified as a historical monument. A dedicated historical section covers Saint-Lô from Neolithic times through WWII reconstruction. The museum opens afternoons only from September to June, with extended morning hours in July and August. First Sundays of each month offer free admission from October to May.

Interesting Facts

During a 2018 inventory, curators rediscovered a Virgin and Child painting by Spanish artist Juan Bautista Martínez del Mazo, a 17th-century work that had been on loan from the Louvre since 1863. The painting had been in the collection for over 150 years before its attribution was properly identified.
The famous Marbre de Thorigny is misnamed — it's actually made of sandstone, not marble. The artifact was discovered in 1580 in the town of Vieux (Calvados) and named after the Château de Thorigny where it was housed before coming to the museum.
When war threatened in 1939-1940, museum staff evacuated the art collection to locations across France. This decision saved most paintings from destruction when Allied bombardments in June 1944 destroyed the original museum building along with nearly the entire city.
