Martainville Manor (Château de Martainville)
About Martainville Manor (Château de Martainville)
The Château de Martainville is one of the finest examples of early Renaissance architecture in Normandy, built between 1485 and 1495 by wealthy Rouen merchant Jacques Le Pelletier. This beautifully preserved castle features distinctive red and black brick walls decorated with glazed patterns of hearts, crosses, and diamonds, combined with white Vernon stone. Since 1961, it houses the Museum of Norman Arts and Traditions, displaying an exceptional collection of Upper Norman furniture spanning the 15th to 19th centuries across 28 rooms. Visitors can explore reconstructed farm interiors from different Norman regions and admire one of France's most important collections of traditional Norman bonnets, jewelry, and costumes. The grounds include original outbuildings such as a dovecote and bread oven. Located 17 km northeast of Rouen, the château is closed on Tuesdays and has reduced winter hours from October to March.
Interesting Facts
The Château de Martainville served as the architectural inspiration for the famous Château de Chenonceau in the Loire Valley. Thomas Bohier, general des finances de Normandie, visited Martainville and was so impressed by its innovative design that he incorporated similar elements when building Chenonceau in the early 16th century.
In 1905, the château narrowly escaped destruction when a cattle merchant purchased it with plans to demolish the historic structure. The French State intervened and bought the property in 1906, saving this Renaissance gem just in time. The merchant had already cut down all the oak tree alignments on the estate before the rescue.
The château pioneered an absolutely symmetrical floor plan revolutionary for its time, with a central corridor and independent rooms on each side. This departure from the traditional medieval layout of interconnected chambers influenced over a dozen 16th-century Norman buildings and marked a significant shift in French residential architecture.
