Le Pollet District
About Le Pollet District
Le Pollet is Dieppe's historic fishermen's quarter, located on the right bank of the Arques river estuary. This atmospheric neighborhood has been home to the city's sailors and fishing families since the Middle Ages, remarkably escaping the devastating Anglo-Dutch bombardment of 1694 that destroyed much of central Dieppe. Wandering through its narrow cobblestone streets lined with traditional brick and flint houses, visitors can experience the authentic maritime heritage that made Dieppe one of Normandy's most important fishing ports. The quarter is connected to the city center by the iconic Pont Colbert, France's only surviving swing bridge, built in 1889 with 30,000 rivets in the style of Gustave Eiffel. At the foot of the chalk cliffs, visitors can still see the remains of the 'gobes' - cave dwellings carved into the rock that housed fishing families until 1940. The district is crowned by the Notre-Dame de Bonsecours chapel, built in 1876 to honor sailors lost at sea, offering panoramic views over the harbor and English Channel.
Interesting Facts
The Poltais, as residents of Le Pollet are called, developed their own distinct dialect and culinary traditions over centuries. Their isolation on the right bank of the river created such a unique culture that recipes prepared 'a la poltaise' still feature fish-based dishes passed down through generations of fishing families.
Le Pollet was once believed to have been founded as a Venetian trading post in medieval times, similar to Venice's establishment in Bruges. This romantic theory, proposed by historian Louis Vitet in the 19th century, suggested Italian merchants created this riverside settlement, though modern historians now link the name to local Norman place-name patterns instead.
The largest of the 'gobes' cave dwellings was a remarkable underground complex of 50 meters deep, located directly beneath the Notre-Dame de Bonsecours chapel. This labyrinthine space took half an hour to walk through completely, and before becoming home to impoverished fishing families, these caves were used by smugglers to hide contraband salt, tobacco, and porcelain brought in from the sea at night.
