About Iron Mike Monument

The Iron Mike Monument is a 4.25-meter bronze statue of an American paratrooper standing at La Fière, 3.5 km west of Sainte-Mère-Église. Unveiled in 1997, the statue is a replica of the original 1961 sculpture at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, modeled on Sergeant Major James Runyon. The monument commemorates the Battle of La Fière Bridge (June 6-9, 1944), where the 82nd Airborne Division fought to control the strategic crossing over the Merderet River. This four-day battle cost over 250 American lives and was described as one of the bloodiest small unit struggles in American military history. The memorial park includes four commemorative plaques honoring different units involved in the fighting. Visitors can access the outdoor monument freely at any time, with free parking available on-site.

Interesting Facts

The name "Iron Mike" comes from American slang for exceptionally tough and brave men. It was originally a nautical term for a gyrocompass that keeps a ship on an unwavering course, symbolizing the paratroopers' steadfast determination. The name also references Saint Michael, patron saint of Airborne forces.
German forces deliberately flooded the Merderet marshes before D-Day, turning the area into a deadly trap. Many paratroopers drowned after landing in the flooded fields at night, weighed down by their equipment. Those who survived had to fight through waist-deep water to reach the bridge.
Every year during the first week of June, the 82nd Airborne Division's commanding general travels from the United States to attend commemorative ceremonies at the monument. Demonstration parachute jumps are performed over the historic drop zones, recreating the airborne landings of 1944.
