Glass Museum (Musée du Verre)
About Glass Museum (Musée du Verre)
The Glass Museum (Musée du Verre) is a specialized museum dedicated to the art and craft of glassmaking, housed in the stunning 16th-century Manoir de Fontaine built in 1525 by monks from Saint-Michel du Tréport Abbey. Located in the heart of the Bresle Valley, known as 'La Glass Vallée' - a region responsible for producing approximately 80% of the world's luxury perfume bottles - the museum showcases over 30,000 perfume bottles, 250 glass molds, and 300 traditional glassmaking tools across 400 square meters of exhibition space. Visitors can explore complete glass production processes from raw materials to finished products, with detailed exhibits on clay pot techniques, glass compositions, and both manual and mechanical manufacturing methods. The highlight of any visit is the live glassblowing demonstration by two resident master craftsmen who perform traditional mouth-blown glass techniques. The museum is open seasonally from April to October, with extended morning hours during July and August; it closes for winter from November through March. Guided tours run at 14:30 and 16:00, each followed by a glassblowing demonstration - booking in advance is recommended during summer months.
Interesting Facts
The Manoir de Fontaine that houses the museum has a royal connection - King Henri IV of France stayed here during his military campaign in Normandy in the late 16th century. The manor's strategic location made it an ideal resting point for the king as he consolidated his power during the French Wars of Religion.
Before becoming a museum in 1993, the historic 16th-century manor building had been converted into a working farm and remained agricultural throughout most of the 20th century. The transformation from farm to museum required extensive restoration work to uncover and preserve the original Renaissance architectural features hidden beneath centuries of agricultural modifications.
The Bresle Valley's glassmaking tradition dates back over 500 years, and today the region is home to major luxury perfume bottle manufacturers including Pochet du Courval (founded in 1623), Verescence, and SGD Pharma. These companies produce bottles for iconic brands like Chanel, Dior, and Guerlain, making this small French valley the hidden heart of the global luxury fragrance industry.
