François Mitterrand Botanical Garden
About François Mitterrand Botanical Garden
The Jardin Botanique François Mitterrand is a 3.5-hectare hillside botanical garden in the heart of Évreux, created from a former Capuchin monastery garden dating back to at least 1833. The garden features a stunning tropical greenhouse renovated in 2018 with bioclimatic architecture, housing over 400 plant species from five continents including bananas, papayas, and exotic ferns across 169 square meters of space. Visitors can explore winding paths through the sloping terrain, discover classical bronze statues from Bizy including Antinous and Diana the Huntress, and visit a preserved 19th-century ice house and orangery. The park includes city vineyards, natural springs with cascading water features, and two children's playgrounds designed for different age groups. Entry to both the park and greenhouse is completely free, with the park open from 8:00 weekdays and the greenhouse accessible from 13:00. Extended hours until 20:00 apply from April to October, making this a perfect summer evening destination.
Interesting Facts
The garden's tropical greenhouse maintains a constant temperature of 20-25°C year-round and houses over 400 species of exotic plants, including rare orchids, carnivorous plants, and a collection of cacti from around the world.
Évreux has maintained municipal vineyards on this hillside since the Middle Ages, and today the garden continues this centuries-old tradition, producing a small quantity of wine each year that is reserved for official city ceremonies.
The site was originally a Capuchin monastery founded in 1633, and remnants of the monastic heritage can still be seen in the garden's layout, which follows the traditional contemplative garden design favored by French religious orders.
