Farm-Museum of Cotentin (Ferme-Musée du Cotentin)
About Farm-Museum of Cotentin (Ferme-Musée du Cotentin)
The Farm-Museum of Cotentin occupies a 17th-century manor-farm complex with thick stone walls arranged around a central courtyard. The museum recreates early 20th-century Norman rural life through authentically furnished rooms including a family common room, cider press, bakery, stables, and cowshed. Its collection of nearly 2,500 objects earned the prestigious Musée de France designation in 2014. Outside, visitors can observe and interact with rare Norman heritage breeds including Cotentine chickens, Norman geese, Rouen ducks, Cotentin donkeys, and Norman cattle. The vegetable garden and beehives demonstrate traditional farming practices. A current exhibition until 2028 shows how local farmers repurposed WWII military equipment after D-Day. The museum operates seasonally with limited winter hours and is closed on Saturdays year-round. Last ticket sales are one hour before closing.
Interesting Facts
The farm actively participates in Norman heritage breed conservation and sells young animals annually. Visitors can purchase Cotentine chickens, Norman geese, and Norman rabbits to help preserve these rare breeds that nearly disappeared in the 20th century.
The Ferme de Beauvais takes its name from Sieur Beauvais, who lived here in the early 18th century. The property changed hands several times before the Manche departmental council purchased it in 1977, just two years after farming ceased on the land.
The museum's bakery remains operational and fires up during special events, producing bread using the same wood-fired oven and techniques that Norman farmers used a century ago. Some enclosures allow visitors to enter and gently approach the poultry and waterfowl.
