Eugène Boudin Museum (Musée Eugène Boudin)
About Eugène Boudin Museum (Musée Eugène Boudin)
The Eugène Boudin Museum occupies a former Augustinian chapel in Honfleur's historic center, housing over 2,500 artworks with the world's third-largest collection of works by the town's native son Eugène Boudin. Founded in 1868 by painter Alexandre Dubourg with Boudin's support, the museum displays 105 pieces by Boudin including 50 paintings and 55 drawings, alongside works by Monet, Courbet, Jongkind, and Dufy. The collection spans pre-Impressionist and Impressionist art with particular focus on Norman landscapes and coastal scenes that influenced the birth of Impressionism. Visitors can admire Boudin's famous sky studies that earned him the nickname "King of the Skies" from Camille Corot. The museum closes on Tuesdays year-round and has reduced hours from October to March, with complete closure during January. Audio guides are available in French and English for an additional fee. Last entry is 45 minutes before closing time.
Interesting Facts
Eugène Boudin was the son of a harbor pilot and started his artistic career as a stationer in Le Havre, where he met artists whose works he framed. His shop became a meeting place for painters, and customers encouraged him to pursue art. Without formal training until age 22, he became a key figure in the development of Impressionism.
The young Claude Monet, then just 18, met Boudin in Honfleur and credited him with opening his eyes to outdoor painting. Boudin taught Monet the technique of painting en plein air on the Normandy beaches, fundamentally shaping the future leader of the Impressionist movement.
The museum building served as the chapel and dormitory for an Augustinian convent from the 17th century until the French Revolution. The distinctive brick and stone architecture typical of Norman religious buildings remains visible in the museum's exterior walls and windows.
