About D-Day Museum (Musée du Débarquement)

The world's first museum dedicated to D-Day, opened in 1954 on the beach where the Allies constructed the artificial Mulberry Harbor. The museum underwent a complete €11 million renovation in 2023, doubling its exhibition space to 1,200 m² across seven thematic sections. Visitors explore scale models, archival footage, 3D video mapping, and authentic WWII artifacts including Commander Philippe Kieffer's battledress jacket. Large bay windows provide direct views of Port Winston's remains still visible in the sea 80 years later. Audio guides are available in 19 languages. Opening hours vary seasonally: 09:00-19:00 in summer (May-August), reduced hours in winter. The ticket office closes 45 minutes before the museum. Book online during peak D-Day anniversary periods in early June.

Interesting Facts

The artificial harbor was constructed from 600,000 tons of concrete, 33 jetties, and 16 km of floating roadways. Approximately 45,000 workers in 300 British engineering companies built the components in secret before towing them across the English Channel.
After the 50th British Infantry Division captured Arromanches on June 6, 1944, construction began the next morning. The first floating road was operational by June 14 — just 8 days later. The harbor was designed to last 3 months but remained operational for 8-10 months.
During its operation, Port Winston handled 2.5 million soldiers, 500,000 vehicles, and 4 million tons of supplies. At peak capacity, it processed 7,000 tons of equipment daily — roughly equivalent to Dover harbor's capacity.
The original 1954 museum was designed for 30,000 annual visitors but eventually received over 300,000 per year. Before the 2023 renovation, it had welcomed more than 20 million visitors across nearly 70 years of operation.
