Colbert Bridge
About Colbert Bridge
The Pont Colbert is a historic rotating swing bridge spanning Dieppe's port channel, built in 1887-1888 by engineer Paul Alexandre and opened on January 1, 1889. This 70-meter wrought-iron structure is the last large swing bridge in Europe still operating with its original hydraulic mechanism, earning classification as a Historic Monument in 2020. The bridge rotates in just 95 seconds to allow ships passage, a spectacle that draws visitors daily. Named after Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Louis XIV's minister who visited Dieppe in 1672, locals consider it as iconic to the city as Notre-Dame is to Paris. The bridge currently undergoes major restoration (2024-2026) with a €20 million investment, scheduled to reopen in mid-February 2026. A temporary pedestrian footbridge provides access during the works.
Interesting Facts
Despite being nicknamed "Pont Eiffel" or "the little Eiffel Tower" due to its similar wrought-iron construction and cross of Saint Andrew design, Gustave Eiffel had no involvement in building this bridge. It was entirely designed and constructed by engineer Paul Alexandre, who won a silver medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition for this achievement.
The bridge's original hydraulic mechanism is remarkably ingenious - it uses water pressure from the channel itself to power two massive cylinders that drive a heavy chain of 200 links, each weighing 14 kilograms. In freezing weather, operators traditionally used manure or a brazier to warm the mechanism and prevent it from seizing up.
The Pont Colbert briefly held the world record for the longest swing bridge at 70.5 meters, until the 90-meter Arenc Bridge opened in Marseille. Even today, it remains the last large swing bridge in Europe still operating with its original 19th-century hydraulic system - truly a living piece of industrial heritage.
