About Church of Saint-Rémy

The Church of Saint-Rémy is a stunning Flamboyant Gothic church built between 1522 and 1643 in the heart of Dieppe. Construction was interrupted by the Wars of Religion, resulting in a fascinating blend of Gothic architecture with early Renaissance elements. The church features a Latin cross floor plan with a spacious nave, side aisles, lateral chapels, and a choir with ambulatory. One of its greatest treasures is the Parisot organ (1736-1739), considered one of the finest historic organs in Normandy, housed in an exceptionally preserved baroque case with magnificent wood carvings. The luminous interior is enhanced by beautiful stained glass windows by Sèvres and Lusson. Listed as a Monument Historique since 1910, the church remains an active parish while welcoming visitors to admire its architectural heritage. Entry is free, and visitors can explore the interior when the church is open during the day.

Interesting Facts

Charles Le Moyne de Longueuil et de Châteauguay (1626-1685), one of the most important pioneers of French Canada, was baptized in this church on August 2, 1626. He became a lord of New France and fathered two sons who shaped North American history: Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville, the famous Louisiana pioneer, and Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, the founder of New Orleans.
The Parisot organ's baroque case features an extraordinary design with carved angels playing musical instruments - one holds a traverse flute, another a bass viol. The central tower bears the inscription 'Gloria in excelsis' and is adorned with decorative vases overflowing with flowers and garlands. This intricate woodwork by Nicolas Le Quel survived over 280 years and multiple restorations, making it one of the best-preserved 18th-century organ cases in France.
