About Church of Sainte-Radegonde de Giverny

This 11th-century Romanesque church is one of the rare surviving examples of its kind in Normandy, featuring an original semicircular apse with distinctive half-dome vaulting and medieval corbels depicting grotesque figures. The building was significantly modified during the 15th and 16th centuries, adding Renaissance and Flamboyant Gothic side aisles with elegant mullioned windows. Most notably, this is the final resting place of Claude Monet, who lived in Giverny for 43 years until his death in 1926 and was married in this very church. The interior houses remarkable 15th-century statuary including a Virgin and Child in stone, along with a 17th-century painted wooden altar depicting the Transfiguration of Jesus. Note that the church interior has very limited opening hours, typically accessible only during occasional masses or summer concerts, though the surrounding cemetery with Monet's family tomb can always be visited. Combining this peaceful site with a visit to Monet's famous house and gardens creates a complete Giverny experience.

Interesting Facts

Saint Radegonde, to whom this church is dedicated, was a 6th-century Frankish queen who became a nun after fleeing her murderous husband King Clotaire I. According to local legend, she had the miraculous power to cure scabies, which made this church a pilgrimage destination for those seeking healing throughout the medieval period.
The church received partial Historic Monument status in 1927, just one year after Monet's death and burial here, but it took until 2009 for the entire structure to be fully inscribed as a historic monument - recognizing the complete architectural significance of both its Romanesque origins and Renaissance additions.
Also buried in this cemetery is Gérald Van der Kemp, the remarkable curator who spent decades from 1976 restoring Monet's house and gardens to their original glory. A member of the prestigious Académie des Beaux-Arts, he chose to be laid to rest near the artist whose legacy he dedicated his life to preserving.
