Château de Sassy (Sassy Castle)
About Château de Sassy (Sassy Castle)
This 18th-century château in Normandy was built in 1760-1761 by Count Antoine Le Bègue de Germiny. The property combines classical brick and stone architecture with formal French gardens designed by Achille Duchêne in 1925. The south wing houses Chancellor Pasquier's library containing 30,000 volumes, while the interior features Aubusson and Gobelins tapestries. The gardens include five boxwood parterres, three terraced levels, and an 18th-century orangery, earning the "Jardin Remarquable" (Remarkable Garden) label. Still a private family residence, visitors can take guided tours of the interior and explore the gardens independently. The château opens only during summer (July-August), so check the official website for exact dates before planning your visit.
Interesting Facts
Queen Elizabeth II stayed at Château de Sassy for three days in May 1967 during a private visit to Normandy's stud farms. The family redecorated a bedroom (now called "the Queen's bedroom") and renovated the bathroom specifically for her arrival. The château still preserves photographs and two handwritten letters from the Queen.
The Prime Meridian (Greenwich Meridian) passes directly through the western wing of the château, creating an unusual geographical distinction — visitors can stand with one foot in the Eastern Hemisphere and one in the Western.
The gardens were designed by Achille Duchêne (1866-1947), known as "the prince of gardens," who also restored the gardens at Vaux-le-Vicomte. He created the five formal parterres in 1925 on the site of what had previously been a large vegetable garden.
