About Château de Dieppe

The Château de Dieppe is a medieval fortress overlooking the English Channel, now housing one of Europe's most important ivory collections. The castle's origins date to 1188 when Henry II of England built the first fortification, though the current structure with its impressive round towers was largely constructed in the 14th century and rebuilt after 1433. The museum displays nearly 2,000 intricately carved ivory objects spanning four centuries, created by Dieppe's renowned craftsmen who once numbered 300 at the trade's peak. Beyond ivory, visitors can explore 15 exhibition rooms featuring maritime history, fine arts from the Renaissance to modern era, and a dedicated collection of composer Camille Saint-Saëns' personal effects. The castle ramparts offer spectacular panoramic views of Dieppe's beach and harbor. Note that winter hours (October-May) include a midday closure from 12:00-14:00, and the museum is closed Mondays and Tuesdays year-round.

Interesting Facts

In 1694, a devastating Anglo-Dutch naval bombardment destroyed much of Dieppe city, but the castle on the cliffs survived the attack virtually unscathed. This resilience allowed the fortress to become a refuge for the townspeople and later served as a symbol of the city's endurance through centuries of conflicts.
Dieppe's ivory trade began after local navigators discovered the Guinea coast of Africa in the 14th century, making the city one of the first European ports to import raw ivory directly. The craftsmen developed unique techniques using elephant tusks, sperm whale teeth, and even rare narwhal ivory, creating objects so exquisite they were commissioned by European royalty.
The museum interior is not accessible to wheelchairs or strollers due to numerous stairs and narrow medieval passages. However, visitors should note that the climb up to the castle from the seafront, while steep, rewards you with some of the best photo opportunities in Normandy - many visitors come just for the panoramic views even without entering the museum.
