About Christian Dior Museum (Musée Christian Dior)

The Christian Dior Museum occupies Villa Les Rhumbs, the Belle Époque childhood home where the legendary fashion designer spent summers from age 1 to 25. The Dior family purchased this clifftop property in 1906, and its English landscape gardens created by his mother Madeleine profoundly shaped his creative vision. The museum spans three floors showcasing haute couture collections, sketches, photographs, perfumes, and personal items from the House of Dior's archives. The surrounding garden, designed partly by a 20-year-old Christian Dior himself, features rose beds, a pergola, a reflecting pool, and terraces overlooking the sea and Chausey Islands. Open seasonally from mid-April to early November, the museum hosts rotating annual exhibitions exploring different aspects of Dior's legacy. The garden remains accessible year-round free of charge. Book tickets online in advance, especially during peak summer months when the museum opens daily.

Interesting Facts

The villa's name 'Les Rhumbs' refers to the 32 divisions of a compass rose, a nautical term fitting for this seafront property. The entrance hall still features the original wind rose mosaic floor from the Belle Époque era.
Christian Dior never actually owned this villa as an adult. His family was forced to sell it in 1929 during the economic crisis, and he returned only as a visitor. The city of Granville purchased the property in 1938, and it became a museum in 1997.
The museum holds about 3,000 objects including original sketches, photographs, and garments, but each year's exhibition displays only a selection organized around a different theme. No two visits are exactly alike since the collections rotate annually.
