About Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours

Perched dramatically on the eastern clifftops overlooking Dieppe's historic fishing quarter of Le Pollet, this neo-Gothic chapel was built in 1876 by the Mutual Aid Society of the Navy as a memorial to sailors and fishermen lost at sea. The modest interior is filled with deeply moving ex-votos, including miniature boat models offered by fishermen to the Virgin Mary for protection, alongside marble plaques honoring families of those who never returned. The eclectic architecture blends Romanesque, Byzantine, and Oriental elements with distinctive brick construction. Beyond its spiritual significance, the chapel offers spectacular panoramic views across the port, harbor, and English Channel. Entry is free, though specific opening hours are not regularly published, so checking with the Dieppe Tourism Office before visiting is recommended.

Interesting Facts

Dieppe fishermen still maintain the tradition of baptizing their boats at this chapel, with each vessel blessed under the patronage of a specific saint before setting sail. While this custom has faded in most of Normandy, it remains vibrant here and in Brittany, connecting modern sailors to centuries of maritime faith.
The chapel fulfilled a solemn promise made by Dieppe citizens 16 years earlier. During the inauguration of the jetty calvary in 1860, the townspeople committed to building a sanctuary dedicated to sailors, and this vow was finally realized when construction began in 1876.
When first built, the chapel stood in complete isolation on the windswept clifftop, far from any habitation. It remained this way for nearly 40 years until 1914, when the expanding town of Neuville-lès-Dieppe reached the site and the chapel was officially designated as the parish chapel.
