Castle of Dreams (Château des Rêves)
About Castle of Dreams (Château des Rêves)
The Château des Rêves is a 19th-century castle built between 1863-1867 by architect Maurice Sidoine Storez for Marquis Armand Alexis Odet de Montault. The building replaced earlier medieval fortifications on this site, including structures dating back to William the Conqueror's era in the 11th century. Designed in Second Empire opera house style, the castle features ornate interior décor that earned it protected historic monument status in 1996. The nearly 100-hectare domain includes over 4,500 trees representing 90 different species, a lake, and woodlands transformed from formal French gardens into an English landscape park in the 19th century. Visitors can explore the castle through guided tours, ride a small train through the park and woods, take pedal boats on the lake, or enjoy carriage rides through the grounds. The venue also hosts theatrical performances, concerts, and themed events throughout the year. Reservations are required for castle tours. Hours vary seasonally - check the official website before visiting.
Interesting Facts
Ruins of medieval fortifications from the original 11th-century castle can still be found in the forest near the current château. These remnants belonged to a castle once owned by Robert de Leicester, a powerful Anglo-Norman lord who died in 1168.
The estate's dovecote dates from 1766 and is the only surviving structure from the 18th-century château that preceded the current building. It is now protected as part of the historic monument designation.
In 1918, a wealthy Parisian banker named Vincent purchased the domain and owned it until 1939. He significantly expanded the landscaped park, adding many of the exotic tree species that can be seen today among the 90 different varieties.
