Casino Barrière de Trouville
About Casino Barrière de Trouville
The Casino Barrière de Trouville is a historic gaming and entertainment venue designed by architect Alexandre Durville and inaugurated on June 29, 1912. Built in just fifteen months, it quickly became France's largest casino at the time, spanning 6,500 m² on the waterfront between the Touques quays and the Planches promenade. The building features 25-meter high facades with numerous arched bays, portholes, and curvilinear pediments in a colonial style inspired by Louisiana, complete with decorative paddle wheels visible from the entrance. In 1927, architect Georges Wybo expanded it with two large gaming rooms and a central porch. Today the casino offers over 200 slot machines, table games including blackjack, roulette, and poker, plus the La Villatara restaurant with sea views. Entry is free but visitors must be 18+ with valid ID. The entire building was inscribed as a historic monument in 2016.
Interesting Facts
The casino's original gaming heritage in Trouville dates back much earlier than this building - the first gaming establishment, the Salon des Bains, opened in 1838, making the town one of the earliest coastal gambling destinations in France, predating even many famous Riviera casinos.
Artist André Lagrange created two elaborate murals inspired by Louisiana themes in 1927, adding to the building's American Deep South aesthetic. Unfortunately, these original artworks were lost during later restoration work and no longer exist today.
The casino's operator Eugène Cornuéché ran both Trouville and neighboring Deauville casinos simultaneously from 1909-1910, essentially controlling gambling entertainment across the entire Côte Fleurie during the Belle Époque's peak years.
