Casino Barrière de Deauville
About Casino Barrière de Deauville
Casino Barrière de Deauville is a Belle Époque gambling and entertainment complex built in 1912 by Eugène Cornuché, creator of the famous Maxim's restaurant in Paris. The building features architecture inspired by the Grand Trianon at Versailles, with an imposing facade, monumental double staircase, and interiors decorated with Corinthian pilasters and painted frescoes. The casino houses 300 slot machines and 35 gaming tables, along with an Italian-style theatre modeled after the Opera of Versailles, three restaurants, and multiple bars. Located 300 meters from the famous Promenade des Planches, it hosts the Deauville American Film Festival each September. Entry is free but visitors must be 18+ with valid ID; strict dress code applies (jacket required for men, elegant attire for women). Gaming tables open at 19:30 while slot machines are available from 10:00 daily.
Interesting Facts
Ian Fleming, creator of James Bond, played at Deauville's casino as a young man and later described it as 'the most exclusive on the Normandy coast' in his travel book Thrilling Cities. The casino is believed to be one of the inspirations for the fictional casino in Casino Royale (1953), where Fleming introduced Bond's gambling skills as attributes of a gentleman.
The casino's Italian-style theatre is nearly identical to the auditorium that King Louis XIV enjoyed at the Château de Versailles. Its stage is framed by statues of Neptune and Amphitrite from Greek mythology, and the original painted curtain by Fernand Truffaut (1866-1955) depicting the former Ambassadors' Hall in Paris is still in use today.
The 1912 inaugural night drew 1,500 guests including diplomats, politicians, artists, and industrialists, with entertainment provided by the legendary Ballets Russes. The casino was built by Eugène Cornuché after he 'took offense' and resigned from the rival Casino de Trouville in 1909, effectively transforming Deauville into the premier resort of the Normandy coast.
