About Biotropica

Biotropica is one of France's largest tropical greenhouse zoos, featuring a massive 6,000 m² climate-controlled tropical environment that transports visitors to exotic habitats year-round. Opened in 2012 and now an EAZA member, the park houses over 1,300 animals across 130 species, including the only Komodo Dragon in France and critically endangered African Slender-Snouted Crocodiles. The 10-hectare site offers nine thematic zones ranging from the tropical greenhouse with sloths, alligators, and anacondas to the Australian Bush where visitors can walk among kangaroos and wallabies. Highlights include the Asia Garden with red pandas, the Penguin Cove with Humboldt penguins, and a new underwater viewing area for Ganges Gavials. The park is particularly renowned for its conservation breeding programs, having achieved France's first sloth birth in over 30 years. Plan 3-4 hours for a complete visit, and note that hours vary seasonally - the park opens earlier (9:30) and closes later (18:30) during summer months.

Interesting Facts

Biotropica is one of only three parks in the entire world successfully breeding the critically endangered African Slender-Snouted Crocodile, with 20 babies born since 2015. Fewer than 300 of these crocodiles remain in the wild, making this breeding program crucial for the species' survival.
The park sits on the shores of Lac des Deux Amants (Lake of the Two Lovers), named after a tragic Norman legend about a young man who had to carry his beloved up a steep hill to win her hand in marriage, only to die of exhaustion at the summit alongside her.
One of Biotropica's African crocodiles, named 'Léon', has a remarkable rescue story - he was confiscated 40 years ago from a Swiss traveler's coat at an airport, having been smuggled from Togo. He has lived at various French institutions before finding his permanent home at Biotropica.
