Arlette's Fountain (Fontaine d'Arlette)
About Arlette's Fountain (Fontaine d'Arlette)
This outdoor fountain marks the legendary spot where Robert the Magnificent, Duke of Normandy, first saw Arlette washing clothes in 1027. Their encounter led to the birth of William the Conqueror. The original medieval fountain was destroyed during WWII bombardments in August 1944 and reconstructed in 1957 as part of Falaise's post-war rebuilding. A limestone bas-relief by sculptor A. Lerond depicts Robert on horseback watching Arlette at the water. The monument sits in the Val d'Ante at the foot of Falaise Castle, 170 meters from where William was born. Free to visit at any time, it forms part of the Circuit des Remparts walking trail through medieval Falaise.
Interesting Facts
According to legend, when Robert invited Arlette to the castle, she refused to enter secretly. She demanded to arrive on horseback through the main gate in full view of everyone, establishing herself as his equal rather than a hidden mistress. This bold act earned her respect and secured her son William's recognition as Robert's heir.
On their first night together, Arlette reportedly dreamed of a tree growing from her body that reached the sky and cast its shadow over all of Normandy and England. Robert interpreted this as a prophecy that their child would rule great lands. William fulfilled this vision by conquering England in 1066.
The fountain was destroyed during the Battle of the Falaise Pocket in August 1944, one of the decisive battles that ended the Normandy Campaign. Between August 12-21, Allied forces encircled and destroyed much of the German army in this area, but also caused extensive damage to the medieval town.
