About Almoner's Manor (Manoir de l'Aumônerie)

The Manoir de l'Aumônerie is a rare example of 13th-century civil Gothic architecture, built in 1214 by the Knights Templar of the Commanderie de Sainte-Vaubourg. The medieval garden features over 200 plant species including medicinal herbs, aromatic plants, a boxwood maze, and an orchard. The 16th-century Chapel Saint-Gorgon contains remarkable Renaissance frescoes depicting the 12 Apostles and 12 Sibyls. Visitors can explore the historic farmyard with its 100-meter deep well and various outbuildings. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1974, the manor is currently undergoing restoration. Self-guided visits are available July 1 to August 15 (Mon-Sat 12:00-18:00); weekends from Easter to All Saints' Day; guided tours year-round by appointment. Reservations required: +33 6 64 33 27 48.

Interesting Facts

The manor was built in 1214 - the same year King Louis IX (Saint Louis) was born. After the brutal suppression of the Knights Templar in 1312 and the execution of Grand Master Jacques de Molay in 1314, the property passed to the nearby Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Georges de Boscherville, transforming from a Templar estate into a monastic almonry where monks provided charity and hosted distinguished guests.
The property's historic well plunges an impressive 100 meters (328 feet) into the ground - nearly as deep as the Statue of Liberty is tall. This remarkable engineering feat was essential for the Templars who established the Genetey clearing in the Roumare forest for agricultural expansion, ensuring a reliable water source for both the manor and its farmland.
In 2020, the manor's medieval cider press (pressoir) was selected for France's prestigious Loto du Patrimoine, a national heritage lottery created by TV presenter Stéphane Bern to fund the restoration of endangered historic monuments. This recognition helped secure funding for the ongoing restoration that began in 2018 to preserve this rare example of 13th-century civil Gothic architecture.
