Historic Village Center
About Historic Village Center
Beuvron-en-Auge's historic center revolves around Place Michel Vermughen, a picturesque square surrounded by half-timbered Norman houses from the 15th to 18th centuries. The village has been classified among 'Les Plus Beaux Villages de France' since 1986, recognized for its exceptionally preserved colombage architecture with colorful painted beams in red, green, and blue. The Vieux Manoir, dating from the 15th century and listed as a Historic Monument, anchors the square alongside the 18th-century Auberge de la Boule d'Or. A reconstructed market hall using authentic materials from old farms stands at the center. The village thrived under the d'Harcourt family, who owned the land from 1382 to 1793. Today visitors can explore artisan workshops in the former school, browse local shops, and use the village as a starting point for the 40-kilometer Cider Route through Normandy's apple orchards. The annual Cider Festival in late October draws crowds for apple pressing demonstrations and local product tastings.
Interesting Facts
The d'Harcourt family who owned Beuvron-en-Auge accompanied William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. This powerful Norman dynasty shaped the village for over 400 years, leaving behind a legacy of well-preserved architecture that still defines the village today.
The Cider Festival has been running continuously since 1972, making the 2025 edition its 54th year. The event features apple pressing using a child-sized press for young visitors, demonstrations from the municipal orchard, and around 30 vendors selling local products including Camembert, Pont-l'Évêque cheese, and calvados.
The village's market hall visible in the central square is not an original medieval structure but was carefully reconstructed in 1975 using authentic timber and materials salvaged from condemned Norman farms. This approach to restoration has become a model for other heritage villages in France.
